About North Way Counseling Services

We are a professional counseling center offering expert, confidential, Christ-centered care for individuals and families experiencing difficult or challenging circumstances. Our qualified Masters-level counselors are trained in various forms of therapy styles, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

We have helped to heal more than 20,000 individuals to become better parents, friends, and members of society. We witness changed lives on a daily basis — amazing transformations of marriages saved from divorce; shy, scared children learning to become confident individuals; people struggling with addiction who acknowledge their issues and work toward conquering them.

Counseling Fees

Our goal is to make counseling more accessible by providing affordable counseling. Therefore, we have options available that can make receiving counseling a reliable option for those who are in need, regardless of their financial resources.

Our Staff

Marc C. Hutchison, MSW

Director
North Way Counseling Services

Marc specializes in adoption, autism, attention deficit, opposition defiance, depression, and marriage counseling. He earned a bachelor’s degree from La Roche College and a Master’s of Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh. He has been a counselor and Sociology professor at La Roche College for more than ten years and has worked in the field of Human Services since 1989.

Cheryl A. Burns, Ph.D.

Cheryl specializes in recovery from addiction and trauma, promoting mental wellness, and helping couples resolve difficulties that add stress to their relationship. She is well trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and has advanced doctoral training in psychodynamic therapy. Her education includes a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from La Roche University (2000), a master of science degree in Counseling Psychology from Chatham University (2010), and a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Fielding Graduate University (2022). Cheryl has over 20 years counseling experience in inpatient, outpatient, and residential programs. She has worked at North Way Counseling Services, offering a Christ-centered approach, since 2011. Cheryl is currently a neuropsychology postdoctoral resident at Northshore Neurosciences in Erie, PA and works part-time for the Counseling Center offering virtual appointments and limited in-person appointments at the Wexford campus.

Laurie Johnson, MA

Laurie is a counselor at the Wexford campus, where she works with individuals, couples, and families. She specializes in grief and loss, women’s issues, marriage and family, anxiety and stress, depression, and eating disorders. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Pittsburgh in Psychology and Communication Disorders. She has been a counselor at North Way since 2006 and previously provided services to individuals and families at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and TRANSACT Health Systems. In her counseling, Laurie focuses on keeping God‘s truth and grace central to the healing and recovery process.

Dave Loshelder, MS, LSSBB, CDT, CSAF

Dave is a counselor at the Wexford, Dormont and Oakland campuses. He specializes in issues related to anxiety, depression, attention deficit, oppositional defiant disorders, interpersonal conflict, and communication issues, as well as marital and family-based relationship problems. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Pennsylvania State University and master’s degree from Duquesne University and holds several nationally recognized certifications including DISC behavioral styles profile assessments and is a certified SYMBIS (Save Your Marriage Before It Starts) facilitator. Working in the mental health field for over three decades, Dave has helped thousands of children, individuals and families find a higher quality of life by employing his unique and effective style of therapy to people across the country. He is sought out as a guest speaker and lectures to corporations, associations, civic groups, and universities on topics spanning from personal achievement, self-development, and leadership. Dave is also the author of three best-selling books.

Robert Rafalko, D.Min., MBS

Robert’s primary charge is to help clients with substance abuse and addiction issues. He also specializes in depression, death, and all the other issues related to substance abuse that face clients and their families. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Business and Communications from Robert Morris University and a master’s degree in Biblical Studies (specializing in Biblical strategies in substance abuse) from the Colorado Theological Seminary. He went on to earn a Doctor of Ministry with honors, and he continues to pursue a Ph.D. in Pastoral Christian Counseling with a focus on substance abuse. Robert has worked in substance abuse therapy, relapse prevention, and outpatient client services since 2010. He is an honorably discharged naval veteran and an ordained Christian minister with the American Missions Teams Evangelistic Organization.

Sara Zakutney, MS, NCC, LPC

Sara is a counselor at the Oakland and Wexford campuses. She specializes in working with college students, adults, and couples, helping with various difficulties including anxiety, depression, emotional/sexual/spiritual abuse, trauma, grief, disordered eating, self-esteem, and relationship issues. She received her bachelor’s degree in Applied Developmental Psychology form the University of Pittsburgh and her master’s degree in Counseling Psychology at Chatham University. During her time at Chatham, she worked with the Office of Career Development to help students with career preparation, including exploring goals and understanding personality strengths. Her other past experiences include conducting individual and group therapy with formerly incarcerated individuals, working in various educational and child development settings, and ministering to college students while on staff with Cru. She received her National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential and is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Pennsylvania. She is also a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and is a certified SYMBIS (Save Your Marriage Before It Starts) Facilitator, providing premarital counseling. Sara has been a counselor at North Way for six years and loves combining her passion for growth and healing with her faith in Christ.

Katie M. Iwanyshyn, M.S.Ed, ABA

Katie is a counselor at the Wexford campus where she works with children, teens, adults, and families. She specializes in depression, anxiety, emotional distress, Autism, and issues women face. Katie earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from Slippery Rock University and a Masters in Behavioral Therapy from Arizona State University. She has been a counselor with North Way Counseling Services since 2022 and has previously provided services to children and families through Pittsburgh Public Schools. Katie has a passion for the missions field due to her experiences working with children and adults in Ireland, Alaska, Colorado, India and Uganda. Katie chose to work in the field of Christian Counseling because she wants to reach people through God's healing love. She believes in people and the power they hold to change their thinking and change their life.

Reverend Dr. Ron Barnes, LSW

Ron is a counselor at the Wexford office specializing in marital and family therapy. He works with individuals, couples, and adolescents. Ron is experienced in working through addiction and grief issues as well as spiritual integration, formation and faith development issues. He received his bachelor's degree in sociology from Gordon College as well as a master's in social work from Temple University. Ron also has a Master's of Divinity from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary where he studied pastoral counseling and a Doctor of Ministry from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary where he studied spiritual integration in counseling. Ron has also worked as a medical social worker and a hospital chaplain. Ron brings over 35 years of counseling experience at Anchorpoint Counseling Ministry where he was the executive director from 1987-2022. Ron joined the North Way Counseling staff in January 2023.
